FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

“When can babies start swimming?”

From experience Little Floaters have found that the best time to start swimming is between the age of 2 and 6 months but this does not exclude babies younger or older, please contact us for further advice.

Little Floaters believe that it is safe to take your baby swimming before their immunisations but if you have any queries please consult your doctor, health visitor or further information can be found on www.immunisations.org.uk

“Is it safe for babies to go underwater?”

All babies are born with natural swimming reflexes, the most important one for baby swimming is the ‘gag reflex’ (laryngospasm), if a baby takes any water into its mouth during submersion it will trigger the epiglottis to close over the larynx, creating a watertight seal and preventing water from entering the trachea or lungs.

All submersions practised during classes are carefully monitored and subject to strict guidelines.

“I am a non-swimmer, can I take my baby swimming?”

Little Floaters have many parents attending classes who are either non-swimmers or just not confident in the water, this is a very positive step as they are learning not to transmit their fear or unease to their babies.

“My baby cries in the water”

Each baby is different and some will enjoy the water and appear more at ease than others.  It is important to reassure your baby with praise, encouragement, smiles lots and lots of cuddles.  Your instructor is experienced and has been taught to watch and take cues from each baby and will NOT force your baby to do anything that she does not enjoy.

Think about the timing of your class, Is your baby hungry or tired?
If your baby cries uncharacteristically she may not be feeling well or be teething, this may become apparent in days to come.

Babies also go through phases and may be especially clingy, if you are concerned please contact Cerys to discuss these issues.
